Normanton Church at Rutland Water, was the private chapel to the Normanton Estate and was formally known as St Matthews Church.
The Church was built in the early nineteenth century and today sits on the south shore of Rutland Water.
When Rutland Water was built, Normanton Church stood below the proposed water line of the new reservior. It was saved from destruction through a voluntary project and today is home to a museum.
This view of Normanton Church is from the east side of Rutland Water looking west with the Rutland sailing club in the distance. One of our favouite walks is from Sykes Lane at Empingham across the damn and on to the Normanton passing Normanton Church on the right.
